What Is Small Business Saturday?

Small Business Saturday is an annual UK campaign that encourages people to shop with independent businesses and retailers in their own local communities, across the whole country. It is often searched for as small business day, although it is a campaign day rather than a bank holiday or an official national observance.

The idea began in the United States in 2010, when American Express launched it. The UK version followed on 7 December 2013, and American Express remains its principal supporter. Business groups including the Federation of Small Businesses have backed it, and politicians from every major party have publicly supported it.

It is a consumer movement more than a sales event. There is no official discount scheme, no rulebook and no fee to take part. Any independent business can join in by promoting itself on the day, from a florist on a high street to a Shopify brand run by solo entrepreneurs and shipping from a unit in Leeds. Alongside the Saturday itself, the campaign runs year-round activity, including the Nation's Favourite Businesses programme, which gives selected firms press and social exposure and invitations to events at places such as Downing Street.

When Is Small Business Saturday in 2026?

In the UK, Small Business Saturday falls on the first Saturday of December. In 2026, that is Saturday 5 December.

The American date is different. US Small Business Saturday is held on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, which is 28 November 2026. If you sell to both markets from one Shopify store, you get two chances in eight days, with Black Friday on 27 November and Cyber Monday on 30 November sitting between them.

The first UK event took place on 7 December 2013, and it has run on the first Saturday of December ever since. That placement matters for planning. By 5 December, gift shoppers are active but still have time to receive an order before Christmas, so delivery promises are central to conversion. Check Royal Mail's current last posting dates before you promise a delivery date.

How Big Is Small Business Saturday in the UK?

Spend on the day runs into hundreds of millions of pounds. Research following the 2016 event estimated that consumers spent £717 million with small businesses, a rise of 15% on 2015, and the 2017 campaign was put at about £748 million. For 2024, an American Express survey of 4,000 UK adults suggested around £634 million and more than 10 million people shopping small.

Treat these as scale indicators rather than a trend line. They are survey-based estimates, methods differ between years, and they cover shops and online together.

The size of the audience you are competing for is easier to pin down. The Department for Business and Trade counted 5.69 million private sector businesses in the UK at the start of 2025, of which 5.64 million were small, with 0 to 49 employees. Around 75% had no employees at all, and SMEs accounted for about 60% of private sector employment, so the impact of a good trading day reaches business owners and the local economy in every part of the country.

That matters for a Shopify brand. Most UK small businesses are one-person operations, and the shoppers who respond to the day want exactly that: a real person behind the product.

Why Small Business Saturday Matters for Shopify Brands

Small Business Saturday gives independent online brands a reason to be noticed in the busiest shopping month of the year. The campaign welcomes online sellers, wholesalers and manufacturers alongside high street retailers, so a Shopify store qualifies in exactly the same way as a market stall.

The timing helps. Black Friday and Cyber Monday reward the biggest discounts and the largest ad budgets, which favours large retailers. The first Saturday of December is different: shoppers are already in a buying mood, and a story-led message about supporting a local community and a small team stands out from a wall of percentage-off banners.

There is also a longer-term return. A first order placed because someone wanted to shop small is a warm introduction, and the follow-up is where the value sits. Brands that capture the email address, send a genuine thank-you and invite a second order do far better than those that treat the day as a one-off spike, and the independent, local angle gives you a natural story to keep telling. Our guide to customer retention strategies for ecommerce covers that second step in detail.

How to Prepare Your Shopify Store

A one-day campaign leaves little room for fixing mistakes on the day. Work through these steps in November so that 5 December is about selling:

  • Choose one clear offer: A single message, such as 10% off a themed collection or a free gift above a set basket value, converts better than five competing promotions
  • Build a dedicated collection: Create a "Small Saturday Edit" with a clean URL and a short intro about who you are, so campaign traffic lands on one focused page
  • Set a time-limited discount: Use a discount code or automatic discount with a start and end time, limited to one use per customer if margins are tight
  • Check stock: Make sure bestsellers have enough inventory for a spike, and decide whether products stop selling at zero
  • Publish delivery cut-offs: Show the last order dates for Christmas in the announcement bar, on product pages and at checkout
  • Test checkout on mobile: Most December traffic arrives on a phone, so place a full order on a handset with your discount code

Announce the offer to your email and SMS lists and on social, using the campaign's hashtags such as #SmallBizSatUK. A teaser a few days before and a reminder on the morning outperform a single send. Our guides to email marketing strategy and SMS marketing apps for Shopify help with the build.

Small Business Saturday Ideas That Work Online

The best ideas make your independence visible. Shoppers are choosing you because you are small, so show them the people and the process behind the product.

  • Founder story content: A short video or letter explaining why the brand exists and what a purchase supports
  • Behind-the-scenes posts: Show packing, making or sourcing in the week before, then go live on the day
  • A limited edition product: A small run created for the day gives an honest reason to buy now
  • Cross-promotion: Feature two or three complementary independents in your email and ask them to do the same for you
  • A handwritten thank-you insert: A personal note in every parcel turns one order into a relationship
  • Local pickup: If you have a workshop, studio or shop, offer local pickup at checkout for nearby customers

If you also sell in person, connect the channels so stock and customer records stay in one place. Our explainer on what Shopify POS is shows how, and a loyalty app can reward the new customers you win. We compare options in our guide to the top loyalty apps for Shopify.

Fitting Small Business Saturday Around Black Friday and Christmas

Small Business Saturday sits inside the busiest fortnight of the retail year. In 2026, the sequence runs: Black Friday on Friday 27 November, US Small Business Saturday on 28 November, Artists Sunday on 29 November, Cyber Monday on 30 November, Giving Tuesday on 1 December, and UK Small Business Saturday on 5 December.

Decide early how the days relate. Black Friday is price-led, and Small Business Saturday works best when it is story-led. A deep discount a week before makes a second one hard to justify and teaches customers to wait, so many independent brands run one modest offer on the Saturday and keep the rest of the month for full-price gifting.

Put the dates on a single plan and give each task an owner and a day. Our ecommerce marketing calendar maps the year, and our Shopify Black Friday guide and ecommerce Black Friday guide cover the weeks around it.

How to Measure the Day

Decide before the day what success looks like. Useful measures include orders and revenue from the discount code, new versus returning customers, average order value compared with a normal Saturday, and new email subscribers.

Tag every campaign link with UTM parameters, such as a campaign name of small-business-saturday-2026, so analytics can separate email, social and paid traffic. Compare the results with the previous Saturday and with the same Saturday last year. Shopify's reports show sales by discount code, which makes the offer easy to track.

Follow up within a week. Send a thank-you email to everyone who bought and set up a simple flow that invites a second purchase. Our Klaviyo flows guide shows the automations that do this best.

Think about search too. Interest builds each autumn and falls away in December, so keep one evergreen page on your store, update the date and offer each year instead of publishing a new URL, and link to it from your homepage in November. Our Shopify SEO guide explains how to structure pages like this.
